The Food Safety and Drug Administration of Meghalaya, National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI) and Nestlé India will train more than 500 street food vendors under Project Serve Safe Food in East Khasi Hills, it was announced today.
This will take the statewide total to over 1,500, a press release informed.
“Since its inception in 2016, Project Serve Safe Food has benefitted over 68,500 street food vendors across 26 states and 4 Union territories by bringing together various stakeholders to create a comprehensive training programme,” the release added.
EKH Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah said, “The initiative has helped more than 1,000 street food vendors in the past few years and I am confident that it will continue to strengthen them in the future.”

The project has been working towards empowering the street food vendors by upgrading their skills through relevant training on hygiene and food safety practices. Nestlé India launched the initiative in 2016 and has trained street food vendors in Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
