Shillong, Jun 15: Suicide is the most likely reason behind the two deaths by hanging reported in Nongthymmai Jingkieng Lumsohphoh on Sunday morning, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said today.
The two bodies were autopsied at NEIGRIHMS but the report will only be available in a week’s time.
“All so far indicates suicides, nonetheless the matter will be confirmed after the postmortem report is received. Investigation is continuing to ascertain, if it is suicide, then the reasons behind taking this drastic step. If the postmortem report says otherwise then we will take up criminal proceedings accordingly,” the district police chief said.
The woman was identified as Prinomi Hajong and the man as Simanta Hajong. Both are from South West Khasi Hills – Balat and Ranikor respectively.
Syiem informed that the two were in a relationship but lived separately. Prinomi worked in a cafe and Simanta in a shop selling household appliances not far from where their bodies were found.
Personnel from Laitumkhrah Police Station, senior officers from the district and forensic unit arrived at the scene and conducted all formalities at the spot.
