Shillong, Jun 16: The All Meghalaya Domestic Workers Union (AMDWU) on Tuesday observed International Domestic Workers Day, highlighting workplace challenges faced by domestic workers across the state.
AMDWU members said nearly 80 per cent of domestic workers face difficulties at work, including long working hours and discrimination, particularly against those who are not well educated.
“Discrimination needs to be addressed. Domestic workers need a decent wage to take care of their families,” they said.
They also stressed the need for job security and registration of workers, stating that registration would allow the union to address grievances and ensure their rights are protected.
On healthcare, the union said workers need access to treatment at hospitals or health centres during illness. The union further demanded a mandatory one-day weekly break, maternity assistance during pregnancy, and pension benefits.
They added that domestic workers should get “all help and protection against suppression or from being taken advantage of in any kind” so they feel secure in society.
The AMDWU has appealed to domestic workers in Meghalaya to register with the union to avail support and safeguard their rights.
