Shillong, Jun 12: A construction worker died after he was buried alive at a worksite in Mawdiangdiang today.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) conducted the recovery operation. The incident took place in the afternoon, with the SDRF team reaching the site at around 2:40pm following intimation from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).
Preliminary assessment revealed that labourers were carrying out excavation work for a building foundation when a mass of filled soil from the upper portion of the site suddenly gave way and collapsed into the excavation pit. During the incident, one labourer was trapped beneath the debris and after approximately one hour of intensive operation, the SDRF team located and retrieved the victim from beneath the debris at 4:10pm.
The body was subsequently handed over to the concerned authorities and ambulance personnel in the presence of officials from the Mawdiangdiang Police Outpost, the headman of Mawdiangdiang, the owner of the construction site and co-workers of the deceased, the SDRF said in a press release today. The identity of the victim was not revealed.
