A delegation led by former MLA KC Boro met Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan today concerning the gangrape of two minor tribal girls belonging to the Koch community on April 16 in South West Garo Hills.
The meeting, held at Raj Bhavan here, saw Boro accompanied by members of the Meghalaya Koch Women Welfare Association (MKWWA). Boro expressed deep concern over the incident and submitted a memorandum to the Governor. The victims have sought compensation of Rs 10 lakh, the maximum amount allowed under the Victim Compensation Scheme 2022. Chauhan listened attentively to the delegation and assured them of his support and commitment to justice for the victims.
In a compassionate gesture, Chauhan announced an immediate financial assistance of Rs 50,000 from his discretionary grant to a victim of this heinous crime. The Governor emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all citizens, particularly women and children, and reiterated the need for stringent measures to prevent such incidents in the future. He assured Boro and the delegation that the matter would be taken up with the relevant authorities for immediate action.
Several arrests have been made by police in connection with the crime, with some of the suspects hailing from Assam and others from within Meghalaya.
The meeting also addressed broader issues affecting the aggrieved communities of the region, a press release from Raj Bhavan informed.
