The Meghalaya branch of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), in collaboration with the Jaiaw Presbyterian Church, organised a health camp for displaced people from Manipur at the Kuki Church at Lumbatngen here on July 11.
The initiative came from the church’s Rev WC Khongwir, who is also a life member of the IRCS Meghalaya.
Doctors who volunteered their time included Dr T Wahlang, retired Director of Health Services, and Dr Challiensung. They were assisted by two retired senior nurses, Hunmon Kharbuli and Dil Iangrai and two staff members of the Red Cross led by general secretary Andrew Sawian.
Others present were chairman of the IRCS Meghalaya, RO Wallang, and pastors, including Rev Chongloi from the Kuki Church.
Over 100 displaced persons, young and old, availed of the facilities.
Medical supplies were provided by the Health and Family Welfare Department while the Red Cross provided blankets, kitchen equipment, foodstuffs, etc. Other organisations and individuals also provided essential items which should meet the needs of the displaced for a few weeks. The IRCS also appreciated the local Dorbar Shnong of Lumbatngen locality for its help.
Most of those who have escaped the violence in Manipur to Shillong have lost everything, including hearth and homes, and have nothing to go back to, an IRCS press release stated today. “They truly deserve not only our sympathies but positive action to help them pick up their shattered lives.”
