Shillong, Jun 22: Two “notorious” drug traffickers have been arrested in the city during a raid, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) said today.
Sabina Begum (21), a permanent resident of 5th Mile, Samdhara in Tezpur, Assam and Viru Singh (40) of Punjabi Line, Bara Bazar were arrested during an ambush operation conducted in Lumsurvey area on Monday.
ANTF Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said both are suspected to be connected to a larger organised crime syndicate operating in Shillong, involved in the illicit drug peddling network.
During the operation, the team recovered and seized one plastic soap box containing suspected heroin weighing a total of 16.1 grams and 47 colourful vials containing suspected heroin and one mobile phone.
A case has been registered at the Sadar police station under the NDPS Act, and the ANTF is continuing its investigation to uncover potential linkages, the SP said.
Singh said the Lumsurvey area has seen three cases related to contraband trafficking under the NDPS Act, resulting in the arrest of seven individuals, predominantly from Assam this year.
The ANTF Meghalaya is maintaining strict surveillance over illegal activities in the Lumsurvey area and remains committed to taking stringent action against individuals involved in drug trafficking and other narcotics-related offences, he added.
