The East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has issued new facemask guidelines necessitating the wearing of three-ply surgical masks or N95 masks by citizens when in public. Cloth masks made out of cotton, while commonly used, “may be inadequate for maximum protection”, the DC said. However, they can be worn in combination with a surgical mask. Masks made of leather or other materials are also advised against. The DC minced no words in saying that mask usage in the district, especially Greater Shillong “has been observed to be sloppy and careless and in some cases a mere formality whenever law enforcement agencies are around.”
