Shillong, Jul 15: Three children died after allegedly coming into contact with a fallen 11kV power line in Umtangling village under the Umiam police station in Ri Bhoi district.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon at around 2 pm. Among the three, two were siblings aged 11 and 12 years. The victims accidentally came into contact with the electrified wire, which had snapped and fallen to the ground.
Umtangling Rangbah Shnong Bok Nongbsap said the heartbreaking tragedy was unforeseen. He stated that he had previously alerted the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) regarding the deteriorating condition of the power lines in their area, but no action had been taken by the concerned department.
He said residents have faced nearly a week of electricity disruptions attributed to a faulty transformer.
Residents are now demanding a thorough investigation into the incident and immediate preventive measures to avert similar tragedies in the future.
