Shillong, Jul 14: The Khasi Students Union (KSU), Shillong Mihngi Circle on Tuesday locked an under-construction temple, located inside the premises of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Mawdiangdiang.
According to the union, the land, designated as government revenue land, should not be repurposed for unauthorised religious structures.
The KSU led by Assistant Organising Secretary Jeremiah Pohthmi met the DIG of CBI to raise their concerns.
According to KSU, the meeting turned heated after officials failed to give a firm assurance, prompting the union to lock the structure in protest.
The union claims that the CBI authorities contradicted previous assurances that no such development would take place on the government property. Pohthmi alleged the that the construction was nearing completion inside the premises.
“We have given the concerned authorities one week to demolish this temple built inside a government office. If no action is taken within this period, the union will be forced to take further stronger steps,” Pohthmi said.
The KSU’s objection letter stressed that as a premier investigative agency, the CBI must abide by laws governing government property, referring to Supreme Court rulings against the misuse of public land for unauthorized constructions, especially of a religious nature.
