Shillong, Jul 15: The Deputy Commissioner of the Eastern West Khasi Hills District has issued an advisory for tourists visiting the area in view of heavy rainfall, the risk of landslides, flash floods, and other hazards during the South-West monsoon season.
Tourists are advised to wear life jackets when engaging in activities near or on the water, follow safety instructions, warning signs, and local advisories. Staying within designated swimming, boating, and recreational areas is essential, especially when children are involved, the advisory said.
Visitors should also monitor weather forecasts and water conditions before participating in any activities and to avoid rivers, waterfalls, and streams during and after rainfall to minimise risks.
Tourists have been asked to avoid swimming in restricted or unsafe areas, entering the water during rough weather, and removing life jackets while boating. Tourists have been cautioned to refrain from littering or polluting the environment, damaging natural features, or feeding wild animals.
Furthermore, climbing slippery rocks or cliffs can lead to serious injuries and should be avoided. It is imperative that visitors cooperate with local authorities and guides, especially in case of emergencies, the advisory said.
