Shillong, Jul 13: Shillong will resonate with the rich history and spirit of the Khasi people as the Sangeet Natak Akademi, in collaboration with the Riti Academy of Visual Arts, unveils a full-length theatrical production titled, ‘Rikynti Ka Rilum Khasi’ (Virasat – The Eternal Hills) on July 15.
The performance aims to commemorate the essence of the national song “Vande Mataram”, illustrating the narrative of resistance against British colonial rule.
Directed by Phrangsngi Wahlang and written by Raphael Warjri, the play interlaces history, folklore, music, and dance, embodying the traditional Khasi phawar—an oral poetic narrative form. Audiences will witness the struggles of the Khasi people, spanning from the heroic Anglo-Khasi War, led by U Tirot Sing Syiem, to modern-day efforts for safeguarding indigenous identity and self-governance.
Organisers said, ‘Virasat – The Eternal Hills’ is not just a theatrical performance; it is a vibrant tribute to the legacy of the Khasi people and a call to preserve their rich traditions in the tapestry of India’s collective heritage.
