Shillong, Oct 8: A three-day capacity building training on Incident Response System (IRS) culminated today with a mock exercise simulating an earthquake.
The three-day training, organised by the Office of the Block Development Officer, Shella-Bholaganj, in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), aimed to boost disaster preparedness in the region.
Held at the Sub-Divisional Officer premises in Sohra Civil Sub division, the event drew participants from various departments including Fire and Emergency Services, Public Works Department (PWD), Public Health Engineering (PHE), and SDPRO. School students, village volunteers, and Aapda Mitra volunteers also joined, highlighting the community-centric approach to disaster management.
The key highlights of the training are CPR and First Aid Techniques wherein participants learned essential life-saving skills, mock earthquake drill, testing emergency responses and coordination during emergency.
The event underscored the importance of enhancing local disaster resilience. Such capacity-building initiatives are vital as they empower communities to effectively manage and respond to emergencies, aligning with broader disaster risk reduction goals promoted by institutions like the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM).
