Shillong, Jun 18: The State forest department seized a huge amount of timber and machineries and shut down four illegal sawmills in a multi-range operation carried out in North Garo Hills on Thursday.
The operation specifically targeted illicit timber-cutting factories located in the Bajengdoba and Mendi areas by a joint task force, consisting of forest officials from four distinct ranges—Dainadubi, Kharkutta, Darugre, and Simsanggre.
The operation was carried out following intelligence and official complaints lodged on June 11, 2026, by a united front of prominent local civil bodies and NGOs, including Matgrik Do·mesal, APA, ADE, FKJGP, AYWO, and ASPF.
During the operation, the teams dismantled the illegal setups, confiscating high-powered timber-processing machinery and illegally sourced lumber. The rise of unregulated sawmills has raised serious ecological concerns, as unchecked deforestation in the Garo Hills has led to significant habitat loss and degradation of native tree cover.
Range Forest Officer In-Charge (Darugre, Dainadubi, and Kharkutta) Chisaka Ch. Marak underscored the department’s commitment, stating that they will continue rigorous crackdowns to protect Meghalaya’s natural heritage.
ASPF chief organising secretary Raksim Marak in a statement expressed gratitude towards all involved, emphasising the importance of inter-agency cooperation in enforcing the rule of law and preserving the environment.
