Shillong, Aug 1: Four Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) members arrested for allegedly assaulting and parading advocate AH Hazarika were remanded to 14 days judicial custody by a local court on Saturday.
The four — identified as Steve Khyriem, Tyllibor Swer, Jeff Sohtun and Kit Ryngkhlem — were taken for medical examination at Civil Hospital, Shillong before being produced in court.
Hazarika was allegedly paraded from his Keating Road office to Sadar Police Station on the evening of July 28. He faces allegations of sexually molesting a law intern in his chamber and offering “hush money.” The intern has filed an FIR at Sadar Police Station.
Police have registered a suo motu case against the HNYF members.
On Friday, the Meghalaya High Court expressed “serious concern” over the assault by “non-state actors.” Observing prima facie police inaction, the court said it had allowed lawlessness to continue.
The High Court directed police to seize CCTV footage of the incident and ordered the East Khasi Hills SP to appear before it on the next date of hearing.
