Proposals to set up a veterinary hospital at Upper Shillong and a veterinary college in Kyrdemkulai, Ri-Bhoi, are still at the planning stage.
It was in June 2022 that the state cabinet announced that three colleges were to be set up in Meghalaya with a focus on agricultural subjects. Kyrdemkulai was meant to be the location of a veterinary college and another for dairy studies.
Then, in February this year, the Chief Minister announced in the Assembly that the state government had sent in a proposal for a Rs 30 crore veterinary hospital in Upper Shillong, hoping to secure funding from the PM DevINE scheme.
Today, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Alexander L Hek informed that the state is “exploring” the construction at Kyrdemkulai since there is a plot of government land available.
Hek also informed that the government has sent a proposal to the government of India for setting up a veterinary hospital at Upper Shillong. “We hope the central government will sanction it under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North-East Region (PM-DevINE),” he added.
