The frequent transfer of government officials in and out of North Garo Hills is having an adverse effect on the district’s growth, Timjim K Momin, vice-president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress, said today.
Claiming political interference by sitting MLAs (none of whom are from the Congress) in the district, Momin said that effective officials are “discouraged” from serving in North Garo Hills.
The MLAs’ “political egos” forced the transfer of these officials and the ones who pay for it are the general public who are “unable to benefit from the blessings and knowledge of the many excellent” Deputy Commissioners, Additional DCs, etc.
Education is a big area where the district is falling behind, Momin claimed, and the former DC had this as a strong area of focus where the official had planned on identifying dropouts and providing free education to them, etc.
Another significant project with serious shortcomings as a result of frequent transfers is the Greater Urban Water Supply Scheme, which NGH does not have, in stark contrast to other districts.
The state of affairs is so bad that even supporters of the sitting MLAs are upset, Momin alleged.
