The All Naga Kuki Catholic Youth Association Shillong (ANKCYAS) marked its silver jubilee with great fervour and gratitude at St Margaret’s Higher Secondary School, Laitumkhrah, today.
The landmark celebration, commemorating 25 years of unity and fellowship between the Naga and Kuki communities, drew a large gathering of faithful and well-wishers.
The day’s programme began with a solemn Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Auxiliary Bishop of the Shillong Archdiocese, Bernard Laloo. In his homily, Bishop Laloo emphasised the importance of thanksgiving and cultivating a spirit of gratitude, rooted in forgiveness and reconciliation. He noted that “gratitude is an act of Holiness”, enduring harmony among diverse communities is a reflection of divine grace.
The event was graced by former cabinet minister James K Sangma. In his address, he expressed appreciation for the unity displayed by the Naga and Kuki youth. He remarked on the beauty of Shillong as a shared home for many communities and acknowledged the positive contributions made by such associations to the cultural and social fabric of the state.
Following the Mass, a cultural programme unfolded, showcasing traditional songs and dances performed by various tribes from Nagaland and Manipur. The rich tapestry of cultures underscored the association’s spirit of inclusion and mutual respect.
Fr Thungbemo Paul, Chaplain of ANKCYAS, in his message highlighted the significance of the occasion. “Given the historical tensions between the Nagas and Kukis, 25 years of togetherness is not just remarkable but a divine blessing,” he said. He commended the association for being a unique platform where both communities stand united in faith and brotherhood.
