Meghalaya has never elected real fighters but leaders of mudslinging, Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) Lamphrang Kharbani remarked.
Speaking at a confirmation ceremony of the newly elected members in West Jaiñtia Hills held at Myntdu, he said, “After Kiang Nangbah and Tirot Sing and ever since statehood, the state has not produced quality leaders who would fight for implementation of the inner line permit, inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and settlement of the border dispute.”
Though the state has seen a steady growth in terms of sports, health facilities and roads, Kharbani said, “We now lack feistiness to rise and fight for the state and the jaitbynriew.”
He said the Land Transfer Act and the Sixth Schedule are not enough to protect the indigenous tribals of the state and that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will lead to bloodshed.
Kharbani said the organisation will once again go to New Delhi after the Lok Sabha elections to pursue with the demand for implementation of the ILP.
“Political parties in the state are busy pulling each other’s pants and this is the reason that the government at the centre overlook the needs of the jaitbynriew,” he added.
Meanwhile, the organisation also felicitated athletes and a physically challenged phone repairer, Ngalong Sukhlaiñ a resident of Memory Colony during the ceremony.
The HANM in West Jaiñtia Hills district will be led by Wankishwa Mawlong as president.
