Jowai, Aug 19: The Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairperson of the District Highway Safety Task Force (DHSTF) of West Jaintia Hills has directed the immediate removal and shifting of roadside stalls, shops, vending units and other commercial activities, that are operating along the Right of Way (RoW) of National Highway 40E/206 located at 217th Km from Ch:216,060.00 to Ch:216,540.00 m.
The district administration has observed that roadside vending and commercial activities are being carried out within the RoW of the said stretch of the highway. Such activities are causing obstructions to vehicular traffic, posing serious risk to public safety and hampering the routine maintenance and operation.
The eviction is in keeping with Supreme Court directions that prohibit the construction, operation, or continuation of any dhaba, eatery, or commercial structure within the RoW of any national highway.
Commercial operators have 48 hours to move their establishments off the RoW. The DC has appealed to all concerned to comply with the direction within the stipulated time and extend full cooperation with the authorities.
