A man is on the run after he allegedly raped a 14-year old orphan.
The incident happened on April 17 when he was entrusted to take the girl to school by the family who takes care of her.
The accused identified as 48 year-old Rakban Ch Momin of Beti Apal village in Dainadubi under North Garo Hills district. He was known to the victim who addressed him as grandfather.
“He waylaid the girl and sexually assaulted her that day. After the act there was an attempt to cover up the crime though with some people being aware of it, the matter could not be compromised,” said one of the NGO members, Brayan Marak.
The girl was being cared for by a family where she was helping with household chores while also getting herself an education. The case became known only today after which the police went on a search for the victim, who hails from East Garo Hills as well as the accused.
“We have registered a case against the accused under POCSO and various sections of the IPC. A search was carried out in his house in Dainadubi but he has gone missing since the past two days. We are now on the lookout for the accused,” North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma said.
