The local unit of the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) has expressed concern regarding shopkeepers allegedly selling expired food and cosmetics in Jalaphet village.
The JNC wrote to East Jaintia Hills Commissioner of Food Safety, AB Tyngkan, over its fears for the health and safety of consumers.
JNC Jalaphet president Andy Bareh said that despite repeated warnings and awareness campaigns, shopkeepers continue to sell expired goods. “This is unacceptable and demands immediate action,” a JNC press release said today.
Illiteracy is still relatively high in rural Jalaphet and consumers may not know when a product has expired, so it is incumbent upon shopkeepers to not sell goods that are no longer usable, Bareh said, while calling for inspections by the authorities.
