Shillong, Aug 19: The East Jaintia Hills District Magistrate has banned the sale of petrol and diesel in loose quantities across the district with immediate effect.
In an order issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, DM Manish Kumar cited inputs from police about the KSU rally and likelihood of intensified agitation over unfulfilled demands.
The order prohibits sale of fuel in jerry cans, bottles and other containers without authorization, citing fire hazards and threat to public order under the Petroleum Act, 1934.
Violators will face action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
However, diesel supply for mobile towers and road construction companies will continue as per existing orders, subject to compliance with the Petroleum Act.
