Khliehriat, Aug 20: A case of house-breaking, robbery and criminal intimidation was reported from Dona Bhoi village in East Jaintia Hills district in the early hours of Thursday
In a complaint submitted to the in-charge of Umkiang Police Patrol Post Sarthe Teron, resident of Dona Bhoi village, alleged that around 3 am, a group of 5-6 unknown persons suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals broke open the backside door of his house and entered forcibly while he, his wife and children were asleep.
Teron stated that the intruders tied up the family members and threatened them with a sword, warning them not to raise an alarm. He alleged that the persons then broke open an almirah and took away cash amounting to approximately ₹30,000, one mobile smartphone, clothes, a school bag and other household items.
According to the complaint, after the accused fled, believed to be towards the Bangladesh side, Teron managed to free himself and informed villagers. A search was conducted but the suspects could not be apprehended.
Teron has requested police to register an FIR, conduct an investigation, apprehend the culprits, recover the stolen property and take necessary security measures in the area.
Meanwhile, the Khasi Students Union (KSU), Narpuh Circle has condemned the incident and demanded stricter surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border.
According to Circle President Phanuel Tongper, the union rushed to the spot soon after receiving information. During inspection, it was found that household items inside were ransacked and the back tin wall had been cut open just enough for a person to enter.
The KSU said such cases of robbery and attacks on residents living in border areas occur every year. It cited a similar incident in May 2025 in Umkiang Village, where a woman was allegedly robbed and threatened by Bangladeshi nationals.
The union has urged the Border Security Force (BSF), responsible for guarding the Indo-Bangla International Border, to intensify patrolling and ensure full security for border residents to prevent such incidents from recurring.
