Shillong, Aug 23: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said that the administration has refused permission to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) for the proposed sit-in demonstration at the statue of U Kiang Nongbah on Monday.
“In wake of the incidents which happened on August 19, we have denied them permission,” Baranwal said.
He also said that since the Autumn session of the Meghalaya Assembly starts on Monday and a High Court hearing on the August 19 violence is also scheduled on the same day, the administration is determined that the law and order of the city is not disturbed.
“There is patrolling and presence of deployment of security forces across the city and we will continue to do that till the residents feel safe and secure,” Baranwal added.
On social media posts doing the rounds where people from other parts of the country are advising to steer of Shillong, the DC urged them to visit city and not to judge it because of one isolated incident.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Sunday said that the situation in the city is now normal, days after a rally by the KSU witnessed vandalism and assaults during a black flag rally.
Asked how the government is going to address the five-point demands of the KSU, Dhar said that Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will take a call on the matter.
Meanwhile, on Sunday the central paramilitary forces undertook a flag march to try and restore confidence among the residents of the city. In the city five additional companies of the paramilitary forces have been stationed.
