Sub-Inspector R Marwein of Laban police station here has been suspended from service for being drunk on duty and refusing to register an FIR filed by a woman.
Yesterday night, a woman came to the police station to report about an assault by a taxi driver. However, the police officer who was intoxicated refused to register the FIR.
A video which went viral showed the woman and her family members arguing with the police officer and condemning him for being drunk on duty.
The women police station promptly assisted the victim, and a case has been registered based on her FIR.
Police said that an enquiry was swiftly conducted by the Laban Sector Police Officer and departmental action has been initiated against Marwein by East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Sylvester Nongtnger.
“The public is encouraged to report any similar issues or seek help by calling 112,” police said.
