A man suspected of being a drug smuggler killed himself in Shillong Civil Hospital following his arrest, police have revealed.
Ravi Sunar (26), of Downgate, Nongpoh, was arrested with two others by police for alleged drug smuggling on January 26. They were apprehended by local youth of the Downgate area and handed over to police, who recovered an amount of cocaine from their possession.
The other two suspects who remain in police detention have been identified as Baiakmenlang Tiewsoh and Amandlang Nongsiej.
All three were taken to Shillong Civil Hospital following their arrest. Sunar killed himself while inside a hospital bathroom.
This was informed by the Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad today.
He also told reporters that to ascertain the real cause of suicide, an autopsy will be undertaken.
