Nongpoh, Aug 13: A Home Guard personnel died after electric poles fell on him following a collision between a truck and a pickup on NH-6 in Byrnihat.
The incident occurred around 6:35 pm on August 12.
According to police, a pickup bearing registration number AS-25-EC-3468, carrying electric poles for Nezone Company, collided with a truck bearing registration number AS-01-FC-9640 that was transporting coke.
Megellan Sohkhlet, a resident of Pahamsohthri in Ri-Bhoi District, was on traffic duty at the time. The poles from the pickup fell and struck him, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to Byrnihat PHC, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The pickup driver, identified as Gandhi Kalita of Pachim Boragaon, Kamrup Metro, Assam, allegedly fled the spot but later surrendered at Byrnihat Police Station.
The truck was driven by John Paul Khardewsaw of New Nongstoiñ. Both vehicles were heading towards Nongpoh.
Byrnihat police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The body was handed over to the family after legal formalities.
