Nongpoh, Aug 9: Ri-Bhoi District Magistrate Abhishek Saini has issued an order prohibiting the erection of unauthorised structures and the parking of trucks, heavy vehicles and other vehicles along key stretches of National Highways falling within the district.
The order covers NH-6, NH-37 Old (New NH-27), Umsning Bypass and Shillong Bypass, stretching from Khanapara and Jorabat through Umiam to Lumdiengngan.
According to the order, these highways serve as vital transportation routes for the movement of commuters and goods and any obstruction along the road can seriously affect the smooth flow of traffic and public safety.
The district administration noted that unauthorised structures have been erected at certain locations along these highway stretches. Such structures could obstruct visibility and hinder the free movement of vehicles, thereby increasing the risk of road accidents, including fatal accidents, as well as damage to property.
The administration has also taken note of the unauthorised parking of trucks and other heavy vehicles along NH-6, stating that such parking obstructs traffic flow and poses a potential threat to the safety of road users.
The restriction, however, does not apply to parking areas that have been duly designated or authorised by the district administration.
Anyone found violating the directive will be liable for legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with other applicable provisions of law.
Meanwhile, the office of the Deputy Commissioner launched an inspection drive along the Byrnihat to Khanapara stretch to tackle illegal roadside parking blamed for traffic jams and fatal accidents.
Led by Assistant Commissioner Akash Marak, the joint team from the Transport Department, police and Public Works Department fined several public vehicles, mainly trucks, found parked indiscriminately on the National Highway.
“The highway from Byrnihat to Jorabat must remain clear for safe travel. Such drives will continue to ensure public safety,” an official said.
