Shillong, Aug 19: The East Khasi Hills district administration on Wednesday carried out a special drive to remove overhanging and improperly laid cable wires in key areas of the city.
The exercise was conducted around the DC Office, IGP area and Lok Bhavan, where several overhead cables were found hanging in a disorganised manner.
Officials said the clutter affects the city’s appearance and poses safety and public inconvenience concerns.
The drive is part of the administration’s efforts to improve urban aesthetics, public safety and the orderly management of utility infrastructure.
The administration has urged service providers and cable operators to properly arrange and maintain cables and to remove unused wires. It added that similar drives will be undertaken in other identified locations to ensure cleaner, safer and more orderly public spaces across Shillong.
Cluttered and tangled wiring — including power lines, cable TV and broadband cables — remains one of the city’s most visible eyesores.
