Two men have been found guilty in separate cases of crimes committed against children in East Jaintia Hills.
In one case, one Peitlang Bamon was found guilty under Sections 8 (sexual assault) and 12 (sexual harassment) of a child under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The case goes back to 2021 and Bamon was found guilty at the end of his trial of which the Special Judge B Khriam found the accused guilty. He was sentenced to four and three years, along with a fine.
Meanwhile, in the other case, one Shambhu Ray was convicted under Section 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act (giving intoxicating liquor or any narcotic drug or tobacco products or psychotropic substance, except on the order of a duly qualified medical practitioner, to a child) going back to 2023.
Ray was sentenced to seven years imprisonment with a fine. The judge in this case was Justice Khriam again.
In both cases, if the fine is not paid then the convict will have to serve additional jail time. Compensation of Rs 1.50 lakh and Rs 4 lakh was also awarded in the first and second cases respectively to the victims.
