Shillong, Sep 1: The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) detained a truck allegedly transporting bamboo illegally and handed it over to the Forest Department.
The truck, bearing registration number AS 01 AC 5129 and fully loaded with bamboo, was intercepted on Sunday at around 5:30 pm at Debajani near Gopinathkilla under South West Garo Hills district.
According to AHAM, the vehicle had no valid Transit Pass (TP) or other documents authorising transportation of bamboo to Assam. At the site, one Sahidur, reportedly a purchaser from Assam, along with labourers, was also found.
AHAM informed the Range Forest Officer, Mahendraganj Range, and handed over the vehicle for legal action under the Meghalaya Forest Regulation (Application and Amendment) Act, 1973 and other relevant forest laws.
The organisation has filed a written complaint, alleging the truck has been transporting bamboo without TP and without authorisation from the Forest Department/GHADC authorities at Tura, and has urged a thorough investigation and strict action if violations are established.
