Shillong, Oct 20: A one-day workshop was organised by the Directorate of Arts and Culture under the National Mission on Libraries Scheme on ‘Habit of Reading as a tool for Social development and Economic upliftment’ recently at U Soso Tham Auditorium.
The workshop aims to enhance reading skills and enrich students, booklovers, users, scholars and the public at large by introducing them to good reading habits thereby enlightening people not only of the joy of reading but in understanding the significance of libraries and the role they play in broadening minds, social development and as a power house of information and knowledge.
Arts and Culture Minister Sanbor Shullai, who attended the workshop, emphasised that reading adds immense value as it provides a platform for broadening the way of thinking and nurturing the process of learning. He also adds that it is through reading that knowledge is enhanced and intellect sharpened therefore transforming lives and the public at large.
The habit of reading can make us more aware of our culture, society, etc., thereby making us more informed and well-read individuals in the years to come, he said.
The resource persons Prof Shalini Lihitkar, Head of the Department of Library and -Information Science, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Maharashtra delivered an informative presentation on the role of reading in sharpening well-informed citizens and its contribution to social development and socio-economic progress.
Participants included students from 15 schools, students from North-Eastern Hill University, Martin Luther Christian University, members of Kali Kit Kot and Seng Kynthei Laitumkhrah Pyllun, library professionals and library users of State Central Library.
