Shillong, Aug 20: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) today said that the arrest of its three top leaders late on Wednesday night will not pour cold water on their spirit but will add more fire to the union’s resolve.
“The KSU does not consist of only these three leaders, there are other central executive committee members and those from the various circles and units of the union to carry out objectives forward,” former KSU president Lambokstarwel Marngar said.
The sitting KSU president, vice-president and general secretary were all arrested last night hours after the violent bike rally their organisation had led through the streets of Shillong.
The KSU has distanced itself from the destruction of property and assaults of passersby, claiming that outside elements infiltrated the rally to try and sabotage the movement. The union subsequently decided to call off Friday’s march from Jaiaw to Khyndailad so that these same outside elements would not be able to disrupt it, instead opting to only hold a sit-in featuring senior leaders of the organisation.
However, the district administration has revoked permission for the sit-in and senior leaders are either under arrest or may risk arrest if they demonstrate in Khyndailad now.
