Tura’s College of Community Science, under the Central Agricultural University (Imphal), observed World Youth Skills Day today.
In 2014 the United Nations General Assembly designated July 15 to underscore the imperative of equipping young people with skills for gainful employment, decent work and entrepreneurship. This year’s theme is ‘Youth Skills for Peace and Development’, which champions the role youth play in peacebuilding, conflict resolution and sustainable development.
Jyoti V Vastrad, Dean of the college and chairperson of the event, emphasised the vital importance of skill development among youth, particularly in the agricultural sector.
Vastrad underscored the myriad challenges confronting youth today, including violent conflicts, educational disruptions, online polarisation and economic inequality. She stressed the need to empower young people with skills to foster a culture of peace, nurture responsible global citizenship and drive sustainable development.
The programme featured two esteemed skill trainers who shared their expertise. Priyadarshini Mohapatra engaged the audience with a session on ‘Plant Propagation and Greenhouse Management of Fruits and Vegetables’ and Rocky Thokchom led an interactive discussion on ‘Skill Development in Nursery Management of Ornamental Plants.’
The event concluded with Narmada Hidangmayum expressing gratitude to all participants and contributors and reiterating the importance of recognising young people’s potential as peacebuilders and providing them with skills and opportunities to address challenges and contribute to a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable future.
