Shillong, May 31: A child rights official has raised concern over what she called the “daily rise in crimes” against infants, children and women across Meghalaya, demanding urgent, ground-level action from every village to the police force.
Jinysha D Maiong, member of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said “Meghalaya is the land of peace and of respect and dignity… But today we are very sad to know that we are seeing a daily rise in crimes, especially against infants, children and women.”
Calling out village authorities, civil society, youth groups, Village Defense Parties, police and district officials, Maiong said: “Even small matters can lead to serious consequences. Take responsibility and act immediately.”
She said Dorbar Shnongs must form village-level child protection committees to track child safety, dropouts and flag abuse or trafficking.
“NGOs and school heads must run drives on the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act and Child Helpline 1098. Report crimes against children to police or Childline 1098. Silence endangers children,” she warned.
