Shillong, May 31: Police have so far been unable to corroborate the allegation that two suspected motorbike thieves were assaulted in custody by personnel of the Umkiang police patrol post.
The parents of one Joslymon Lyngdoh said that he had been left with severe health issues that required hospitalisation in Jowai after he was released on bail. Images shared by the family show large bruises on Lyngdoh’s body.
Lyngdoh was arrested on May 21 based on a case registered in Silchar, Assam.
Today the East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police said that Lyngdoh was handed over to police from Assam on the day of his arrested. “Medical examinations were conducted two times for both [suspects] and no injury was found on their bodies,” he said.
In court, the medical reports were examined and the two accused were asked if they had been injured, to which they replied in the negative, according to the court record.
“However, we are trying to ascertain all the facts and action will be taken as per law,” the SP added.
