Shillong, May 22: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation for development project in Tura Town, amounting to over ₹ 150 crores.
These includes redevelopment of Nazing Bazar area, which includes car parking, hotel & space for vendor, Multi level car parking & cinema at Dakopgre, which will accommodate 200 cars, cinema halls with three screens, a gaming zone and food court and refurbishment of SMELC building, including art and Culture Promenade with Museum, kid zone park , cm youth centre and active aging centre.
He also distributed cheques to artists under the Chief Minister Artists Engagement Scheme to support local talent, and launched the Tura Municipal Board Mobile Application to improve civic service delivery and promote digital governance.
The event further saw the announcement of waste management grading for localities, with certificates and mementos awarded to winning localities for their cleanliness efforts, along with the declaration of locality-wise street lighting projects and distribution of sanction letters for CCTV installations to strengthen public safety and urban infrastructure across Tura.
In another event, the chief minister laid the foundation stone for the new building of PASF-Abong Noga College and inaugurated the newly constructed College Conference Hall at the college premises in New Tura.
The new college building is being funded by Dorf Ketal Chemicals India Ltd. under CSR, with the first instalment of ₹5 crore already released. The project is being implemented following a Memorandum of Understanding signed on November 26, 2025, between the P. A. Sangma Foundation, Dorf Ketal Chemicals India Ltd., and Ira Gurukul Educational Trust.
PASF-Abong Noga College commenced its academic activities during the 2022 academic session as a degree college at New Tura under the aegis of the P. A. Sangma Foundation. The college obtained affiliation from North-Eastern Hill University with effect from the academic session 2023 and was recognised as a People’s College under the Grant-in-Aid scheme of the Government of Meghalaya on December 12, 2022.
The chief minister also interacted with residents, local leaders, and community stakeholders at the ‘MLA Connect’ programme held at Matchikolgre in Tura, aimed at addressing local concerns.
Residents raised various issues including inadequate roads, drainage problems, sanitation challenges, and the need for improved public amenities. One major concern was the inability of garbage collection trucks to operate effectively in certain areas during the monsoon due to slippery roads. In response, the Chief Minister directed the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) to explore immediate solutions for uninterrupted garbage collection services.
In addition to infrastructure discussions, residents expressed worries over increased electricity bills following the installation of smart meters. Officials from MeeCL clarified the billing process, assuring residents that discrepancies would be addressed swiftly.
The chief minister acknowledged the need for infrastructural improvements in local primary schools and recreational facilities for youth. He assured community representatives that all concerns related to school infrastructure and youth sports facilities would be thoroughly examined.
Sangma further pledged support for sports equipment to enhance youth engagement and cultural programs.
