An awareness programme on road safety was organised by The Ultimate legend Bikers Association (TULBA) in Mawkyrwat today.
The aim of the programme is foster a culture of safe riding with a focus on promoting responsible road usage.
South West Khasi Hills Additional Superintendent of Police, LW Nongpluh who attended the programme as the chief guest stressed on the need to help road accident victims. He observed that people lose their lives in road accidents after lying unattended for hours because people don’t attempt to help.
Nongpluh informed that under Section 134 A of the Motor Vehicle Act, a Good Samaritan is not liable for any civil or criminal action for any injury to or death of the victim of road accidents but are rewarded for helping such victims.
He also emphasised on the risk involved in driving while intoxicated, to follow road signs placed by the PWD (Roads) and urged parents not to allow their children below 10 years of age to walk on the streets without supervision.
Pointing out that there is a steady increase in the number of accident cases in the country from 2021 with about 1.5 lakh deaths, Nongpluh said Mizoram recorded the lowest number of road accident fatalities annually because drivers and riders obey traffic rules.
The awareness programme was organised in collaboration with the office of the Superintendent of Police, District Transport Officer (DTO) and the Executive Engineer (EE) PWD (Roads) Mawkyrwat Division.
Drivers and pedestrians also took a pledge to follow and obey traffic rules to avoid accidents at the programme and leaflets on road safety were distributed to residents.
