Shillong, Jul 17: The Meghalaya High Court was informed that 12 inmates aged between 70 and 80 are currently lodged in jails across the state.
A division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh was hearing a petition and perused a status report filed by the state through Additional Advocate General K Khan, in compliance with its June 10 order.
As per the report, five are lodged in Shillong jail, four in Tura, and one each in Nongpoh, Jowai and Williamnagar jails.
The bench directed the AAG to furnish details of the cases pending against them, the stage of proceedings, duration of custody, and whether they suffer from any ailment or disability.
The court also took on record a report on the visit to Williamnagar jail submitted by Amicus Curiae T Yangi B. With the Amicus citing “personal difficulty,” the matter has been adjourned to August 10, 2026.
