A group of youth from Hima Sohra today sought immediate action by the Transport Department to stop overloading by trucks exporting limestone to Bangladesh through the Majai land custom station.
The delegation led by Wellborn Bynnud met Assistant Commissioner of Transport Arphar D. Tyngkan and submitted a petition to him on the matter.
Speaking to media persons, Bynnud alleged that those who are responsible for operating the weighbridge at Umdud bridge and another before reaching Lailad, Umdud being operated by the Transport Department are allowing overloaded limestone trucks to move freely without being checked in connivance with some exporters.
“We expect the authorities to act on this matter. If they fail to do so, we will have to resort to other courses of action,” he said.
Bynnud said that this illegal activity of those persons manning the weigh bridges has resulted in leakage of revenue and costing the State dearly.
He also said that the road under the jurisdiction and maintained by Hima Sohra is always in a dilapidated condition due to the plying of overloaded trucks.
He claimed that on September 5, when he and his team went to the area they found out that limestone-laded trucks avoided the weighbridges without weighing the load.
Bynnud also said that they have demanded that the weight of the trucks should be displayed prominently out the weighbridges for transparency and installation of CCTVs in all the weighbridges along Majai Land Custom Station.
He also reminded that some months back the residents of Majai village had also complained about the dilapidated condition of the road.
Limestone export from Meghalaya to Bangladesh through the Majai land custom station near Shella is a very old trade which also brought revenues to the State.
