After more than two years, the popular Shillong Viewpoint will reopen to visitors from this Saturday, the Raid Laban Dorbar announced.
The decision was taken in consultation with the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills and the Tourism Department.
The tourist attraction, perched near Shillong Peak has been shut to visitors since March 24, 2020 by the Air Force authorities at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Security is also a major concern for the Air Force, which has its base there.
The site will reopen from 9am on Saturday but visitors must follow the stringent standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Although the site, accessed via the Air Force station of Eastern Air Command, is to reopen, things will not return to the pre-2020 situation, as visitors will have to register themselves at least one day in advance through the Meghalaya Tourism app or via phone/WhatsApp on 8787565745, 9862238408, 7005621806.
The site will be open from 9am to 3pm on all days except Wednesdays. Visitors must bring ID and Covid-19 vaccination certificates.
Private vehicles will not be allowed inside the Air Force station. Instead, visitors will have to park their vehicles at a place designated by the Dorbar and then travel to the viewpoint by transport arranged by the Dorbar.
The fees will reflect the transport charge – children under 10 will be charged Rs 70 and all others Rs 100.
Halting of vehicles and photography is strictly prohibited inside the Air Force station enroute to Shillong Viewpoint. The use of drones is also banned. Outside food will also not be permitted at the viewpoint.
