Shillong, Aug 3: The Meghalaya government is set to relocate street vendors operating in Laitumkhrah by August 17, with the process already underway following the issuance of notices and in compliance with a court directive, Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said today.
Speaking to reporters, Dhar said the relocation exercise is expected to be completed within the stipulated timeframe.
He said officials from the Urban Affairs Department are in constant touch with the vendors to ensure the relocation takes place smoothly and without conflict.
“Our officers are working on the ground and are engaging with the vendors. We are holding discussions and negotiations with them in a cordial manner. So far, things appear to be moving in the right direction,” Dhar said.
On the question of alternative sites for the displaced vendors, Dhar informed that two locations have been earmarked for those currently operating in Laitumkhrah. These include a section of the Dhankheti parking lot and a privately owned bungalow premises.
According to him, the proposed locations are suitable for vending activities, though the government remains open to addressing any concerns raised by the vendors regarding the facilities or arrangements at the new sites.
Dhar further stated that the relocation drive will continue across other parts of Shillong as part of a phased plan to streamline street vending in the city.
The government will next take up the relocation of vendors from Motphran and GS Road. For vendors operating along GS Road, a site near the Ïewduh parking lot has been identified for relocation, he added.
