Shillong, Aug 6:  Meghalaya recorded 8,000 tobacco-related deaths annually as 9,312 schools and 55 colleges across the state mobilised students in the largest-ever anti-tobacco campaign under World No Tobacco Day, 2026.

Held under the theme “Tobacco! Business of DEATH” from April 6 to June 10, the campaign was jointly led by the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) under National Health Mission and the Department of Education, in partnership with Sambandh Health Foundation. It focused on strengthening the Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) initiative through government departments, educational institutions, civil society organisations and local communities.

Student participation was at the core of the drive. Every school and college was tasked with two activities: an anti-tobacco rally and a signature campaign. Students collected over 25 lakh signatures from family members, neighbours, friends and villagers. More than 6 lakh students took part in awareness rallies across the state.

According to the Department of Education, 8,940 schools conducted anti-tobacco rallies and 8,077 schools organised signature campaigns involving students, teachers, parents and community members. Among colleges, 50 organised rallies, 46 conducted signature campaigns and 15,458 students participated in awareness activities.

Highlighting the urgency, NTCP State Nodal Officer Dr. Nabaneeta D. Mawrie said tobacco not only claims the lives of primary consumers but also harms the environment. “With 47% of adults (aged 15+) in our state using this product, it results in the deaths of 8,000 people annually in Meghalaya. We are committed to implementing the ToFEI strategy as one of our region’s most effective measures to reduce tobacco prevalence,” she said.

State Project Director, SEMAM–Samagra Shiksha Richa Kulkarni said the engagement of 9,312 schools reflects a shared resolve. “Building a tobacco-free Meghalaya requires sustained commitment, strong partnerships, and the active involvement of our educational institutions. Schools play a pivotal role in nurturing informed, confident, and responsible future citizens,” she said.

State Nodal Officer – ToFEI, Department of Education Jennyfer J. Synrem added that the campaign reflects the leadership of principals, commitment of teachers and collective efforts of the education system. “Together, these efforts are not only raising awareness but also paving the way for a healthier, tobacco free future for our children,” she said.

To recognise outstanding efforts, awards were presented at the block, district and state levels. Schools were evaluated in four categories — Primary, Upper Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary — through a three-tier selection process led by Block, District and State Award Committees.

World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on 31 May to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and to protect children and youth from addiction.
