Shillong, Aug 3: Social activist Agnes Kharshiing has sought action against an overloaded truck over alleged illegal transportation of coal.
According to a complaint lodged at Madanrting Police Station on Monday, the vehicle bypassed multiple police stations, transport enforcement, NHAI, and DMR checkpoints, raising questions of systemic failure and potential complicity by enforcement agencies.
The complaint cites violations under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rash and negligent driving endangering public life, the MMDR Act 1957 for illegal mining and transportation, and the Motor Vehicles Act for overloading. It also referenced a Meghalaya High Court ruling that authorities including Superintendents of Police can be held accountable if illegally mined coal passes through their jurisdiction.
Kharshiing has urged police to immediately register an FIR and book the truck owner, driver, and any complicit officials or syndicates facilitating the transport.
The complaint calls for prompt action in the interest of public safety and environmental preservation.
