Meghalaya’s U-19 men’s football team are all set to represent the state at the Khelo India Youth Games 2024, which will be held in Tamil Nadu.
The team were given a warm send-off here today – men’s football is the only event that the state will be participating in this year. Those present to give words of encouragement to the players included Meghalaya Football Association president Hamletson Dohling, Ailad Kynta, Freddy Kharpran, Cliff Nongrum and Khlain Pyrkhat Syiemlieh.
Meghalaya were semifinalists in 2023 as well as in 2022, losing both times to Kerala and thus finishing with a bronze medal each year.
Over 5,600 athletes are expected to take part from around the country at the January 19-31 event.
The state’s 20-member football squad will be led by officials Jeffrey Warlarpih and Beneslaus Khyriem. The other teams in the men’s football are Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab, Jharkhand, Odisha and Goa.
