As part of moves to raise awareness about drug abuse and illicit trafficking and to promote a peaceful environment, the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills has ordered that Monday be observed as ‘No Honking Day’ in the district from 8am to 4pm.
“International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is an important occasion to emphasise the need for collective action to combat drug abuse and illicit drug trade,” the DC said in an order today. “In our efforts to raise awareness and create a positive impact, we aim to promote a serene and noise-free environment within our district. By observing a ‘No Honking Day,’ we encourage citizens to refrain from unnecessary honking and contribute to a quieter and more peaceful atmosphere.”
Honking should be limited to emergency situations only, such as alerting others of an immediate danger or to avoid accidents. However, even in such situations, honking should be used judiciously and minimally. The traffic police have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with this order. Use of sirens by essential services, such as ambulances, fire engines and for the maintenance of law and order in the district are exempted.
