Shillong, Jul 6: An awareness programme was organised at Marapara village by ICAR-KVK, West Garo Hills in commemoration of World Zoonoses Day.
This day is recognised annually to educate the public about zoonotic diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans and become a major global threat to public health and animal welfare.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 200 known zoonotic diseases exist, often transmitted from various animals to humans. Common sources include domestic animals, poultry, rodents, and more. For instance, rabies, primarily spread through dog bites, results in thousands of deaths annually, especially in Asia and Africa. Other notable examples include tuberculosis and brucellosis, with origins linked to bovine species, and diseases like chikungunya and dengue fever.
According to the KVK, the recent focus on a ‘One Health Approach’ is crucial in combating zoonotic diseases. This multidisciplinary strategy involves collaboration among experts in veterinary science, public health, and environmental science, aimed at addressing health threats at the human-animal-environment interface.
The awareness programme, attended by around 45 villagers from Marapara and nearby villages, emphasised the significance of preparedness among villagers, especially those engaged in livestock rearing.
