Shillong, Jul 9: The Garo Hills region is set to experience advancements in weather forecasting with the finalisation of a site for a Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at Albella Chidekgre under Rongram C& RD block.
This state-of-the-art technology aims to enhance weather prediction capabilities and provide timely warnings for the local community.
A joint inspection was conducted on July 8 to confirm the location under Mission Mausam. The team included officials from the India Meteorological Department, IMD, New Delhi, the Meteorological Centre, IMD Shillong, the District Disaster Management Office, DDMO, Tura, Rongram C&RD Block, and representatives of Pattern India Limited, Chennai. The Nokma of Albella Chidekgre and local residents were also present.
The visit was part of the final site confirmation process undertaken by IMD Headquarters in coordination with the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority, MSDMA, and the District Disaster Management Authority, DDMA.
Officials said the proposed DWR will enhance weather monitoring and forecasting capabilities in the Garo Hills region, strengthening early warning systems for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and other extreme weather events.
The radar is expected to provide more accurate, real-time data to help the district administration, disaster response teams and residents to prepare better for adverse weather conditions.
