The North East Students Organisation (NESO) today questioned the silence of the central government on the ongoing law and order situation in Manipur and appealed for peace and normalcy to be restored.
“It has not subsided, not stopped,” NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said on the sidelines of a candlelight vigil for peace, organised by NESO and the Khasi Students Union (KSU) at Khyndailad today evening. “As an organisation for all the North East states, it is high time that peace should be restored in Manipur.”
Jyrwa said that even the presence of a lot of armed forces personnel has not been able to stop the violence. “This has raised a serious concern about the capability of the armed forces in maintaining peace in Manipur and this candle light vigil is observed in all the state capitals of the North East region, including Tura, and it is to call for peace and a stop to violent activities in Manipur,” he said.
Questioning the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Manipur situation, Jyrwa added, “It is surprising and shocking that the Prime Minister of the country, who use to be very active in commenting on any issues affecting the different states of the country, is still silent until today even after nearly two months that this mayhem has occurred in Manipur.”
“We urged and call the PM to speak on this issue and take proactive measures to stop the violence and to solve the issues arising out of this problem.”
On the subject of refugees coming from Manipur to Meghalaya, KSU president Lambokstar Marngar said, “We are very much concerned and we have expressed to the government and met the Rangbah Shnongs. The government is duty bound to ensure that those who came from Manipur should return to Manipur when the situation normalises.”
